Harbor pilots serve the State of South Carolina to prevent marine incidents that would result in harm to the environment, the public, and mariners; and to maintain a smooth and efficient flow of maritime commerce.

Dedicated to Safety, Environment

The Charleston Branch Harbor Pilots’ Association is dedicated to maintaining safety and preserving the environment.

Our Pilots

There are currently 20 licensed pilots for the port of Charleston, all of which have completed a 3-year apprenticeship and attained the rank of Full Branch Pilot, which authorizes them to pilot vessels of any size.

Our Maritime Traditions

Dating back as far as Ancient Greece and Rome, marine pilotage is one of the world’s oldest trades.

Our Association is proud to carry on the maritime tradition of giving back to our local community.

About Charleston Harbor

The minimum channel width from sea to the berth is 600 feet, which is at the final approach.

Staff

Captain Walters joined the Charleston Branch Pilots’ Association in 1991 and is currently the President of the Association.
